CASTRO VALLEY, Calif. -- Tony Gemignani, owner of Pyzano's Pizzeria, won first place in three categories at the International Pizza Makers Challenge in Lecce, Italy in early October.
Gemignani won first place in the Classic Italian Pizza, Pizza in Teglia (pan) and Free Style Acrobatics categories. The event featured more than 50 competitors from countries including Italy, Germany, Indonesia, Tunisia, Albania, Romania, Sri Lanka, Switzerland and the United States.
Both of Gemignani's winning pizzas had a combination of Pendleton flour from the United States blended with 5 Stagioni flour from Italy, Stanislaus tomato products and Grande mozzarella cheese. Gemignani incorporated regional ingredients from Italy and the Puglia region including sun-bathed tomatoes, marinated zucchini, Puglia olives, Salumi Picante, Pugliese extra virgin olive oil and specialty cheeses from the region, such as Pecorino and Burrata. 
American Joe Carlucci received second place in the Classic Pizza Division and Gemignani earned second place in Largest Pizza. Carlucci earned third place in Largest Pizza as well.
