LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Comparable-store sales at Papa John's remain about flat headed into the fall, continuing the chain's year-long streak of soft sales.
According to a news release, comp sales for the five-week period ended Sept. 26 increased 1.2 percent (composed of a 0.6 percent increase at company-owned stores and a 1.4 percent increase at franchise stores).
For the quarter, also ended Sept. 26, comps increased 1.2 percent (composed of a 1.1 percent increase at company-owned stores and a 1.2 percent increase at franchise stores).
Hurricanes and flooding in the Southeast and Atlantic coastal regions in September and August temporarily closed of a number of company-owned and franchise units. Papa John's estimated the rough going pulled domestic systemwide sales down by approximately 0.8 percent for September and approximately 0.4 percent for the third quarter. Company-owned results were even more heavily impacted due to a higher relative geographic concentration of units.
Total systemwide international comps increased 6.6 percent for September and 5 percent for the quarter, on a constant U.S. dollar basis.
As of Sept. 26, there were 2,804 Papa John's units (567 company-owned and 2,237 franchised) operating in 49 states and 18 international markets. Papa John's also franchises 121 Perfect Pizza units in the UK.
