The Hattiesburg American: HATTIESBURG, Miss. — As Hurricane Ivan crept closer to the Gulf Coast on Sept. 15, Hattiesburg's Papa John's Pizza was making triple the number of pizzas for a normal Wednesday, according to store manager James Commagere. Seven hundred pies went to a nearby military base alone that day, and order-taker Dawna Ratliff was hoarse by 7 p.m. after answering the phone since 8:30 a.m.

"Crazy," said Ratliff, 22, as the winds outside the store along U.S. 49 picked up. "It's like a Friday, only worse. Non-stop all day long."

By early Wednesday night, Commagere's nine-person crew was making an average 150 pizzas an hour for delivery by his 14 drivers.
