• House Judiciary Committee passes bill discouraging obesity lawsuits against foodservice industry

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The U.S. House of Representatives' Judiciary Committee passed H.R. 339, the "Personal Responsibility in Food Consumption Act," a bill designed to prevent the food industry from obesity-related lawsuits.

According to a news release from the National Restaurant Association, the bill, introduced by Rep. Ric Keller (R-Fla.) is now slated for a vote by the full House.

"We are grateful for Rep. Keller's leadership in pushing forward this important legislation that focuses on personal responsibility and the voluntary food choices all Americans make, rather than on costly litigation," said National Restaurant Association President and Chief Executive Officer Steven C. Anderson. "We believe Congress and the appropriate regulatory agencies should determine policy in these matters, not judges and juries."

During the markup, Rep. Keller offered an amendment, which was accepted, that would make his bill more compatible with Senate bill S. 1428, the "Commonsense Consumption Act," introduced by Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.)

"Obesity is very complex, and in addition to personal responsibility, moderation, and physical activity, there are numerous factors that contribute to healthier living, Anderson said in the release. "Solely targeting the restaurant industry is overly simplistic ... ."
