WASHINGTON, D.C.—The return of Joe Gibbs as head coach over the Washington Redskins has prompted Domino's Pizza stores in the Washington, D.C., area to implement a one-day "Gibbs tax" for pizza orders placed on Jan. 14.
According to the Washington Times, all persons named Joe will receive a $3 discount on their orders, while customers named Richie, Norv, Terry, Marty or Steve—first names of unsuccessful Redskins coaches (Petitbon, Turner, Robiskie, Schottenheimer and Spurrier) between Gibbs' stints—will pay $1 extra. And anyone named Joe Gibbs, including the coach himself, will receive free pizza for the entire 2004 season.
Gibbs led the Redskins to three Super Bowl titles before retiring in 1992.
The $1 charges will be donated to Youth for Tomorrow, a charity for at-risk teenage boys created by Gibbs.
"We're big fans of Joe Gibbs. This is a great day for all of Washington, and we figured this was a great way to celebrate his tradition and his return," said Ed Treacy, a nine-store Domino's franchisee in Maryland.
Domino's Pizza was the official pizza chain of the Redskins until team owner Dan Snyder tried unsuccessfully to increase the cost for the team's sponsorship. The team's official pizza is now Papa John's, but Treacy insisted the situation is not awkward.
"The bottom line is, we're all Redskins fans, and we hope this brings us back to respectability," he said.
