LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Papa John's International (NASDAQ:PZZA) announced domestic systemwide comparable sales for the five weeks ended June 29, 2003, decreased 6.1 percent (consisting of a 4.6 percent decrease at company-owned units and a 6.6 percent decrease at franchise units).
According to a news release, the period included local option promotions that were not supported by national television, while the prior-year period included a systemwide promotion supported by national television.
Domestic systemwide comparable sales for the 13 weeks ended June 29 -- the company's second quarter -- decreased 4.8 percent (consisting of a 4.7 percent fall at company-owned units and a 4.8 percent drop at franchise units). Both the 2003 and 2002 periods had two promotions supported by national television.
In the release, the company cited ongoing softness in delivery and carryout sales and price wars as causes for the sales drop.
Systemwide international sales for June also were down, decreasing 4.2 percent, on a constant U.S. dollar basis, over the comparable period last year.
For the 13 weeks ended June 29, international sales rose 0.5 percent, on a constant U.S. dollar basis, over the comparable period last year.
