BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Citing delivery pizza-related messes, six Bemidji hotels will charge pizza restaurants for every pizza delivered to hotel guests.
According to the Star Tribune, The Innkeepers of the Bemidji Area, which include operators of Best Western, AmericInn, Holiday Inn Express, Super 8 Motel, Comfort Inn and Northern Inn hotels, will charge 50 cents for every pizza box delivered to the hotels beginning April 20.
Operators of Domino's Pizza, Dave's Pizza, Pizza Hut, Papa John's, Keith's Pizza and Giovanni's Pizza received a letter notifying them of the new charge.
The Tribune report said the pizza delivery drivers must first stop at each hotel's front desk and register the number of pizzas being delivered. The hotels will tally the charges and bill each pizzeria monthly.
In return for the fee, the hotels' operators said they will recommend those pizzerias to guests. They said they'd also allow payment of the service charge through pizza trade-outs.
Pizzeria owners and managers are surprised by the new fee.
"In today's economy, that's a hard thing to swallow," said Dana Gellately, a Domino's Pizza delivery driver-manager.
