SELKIRK, Manitoba -- People across North America are calling for a boycott of Frank's Pizza in Selkirk after news spread about the restaurant firing its part-time delivery driver for helping a gunshot victim.

According to the Edmonton Sun, Marcella McAulay, a 34-year-old single mother, lost her job at Frank's last month after she helped a man who had been shot in the stomach while she was working a shift.

Since the story broke on March 9, McAulay has been interviewed by news organizations from Toronto to Alaska and beyond.

"It's been overwhelming," she said yesterday from her Selkirk home. "I didn't expect that at all."

On Feb. 26, McAulay was one of the first people on the scene of a double shooting on Robinson Avenue. She comforted the wounded man until police and paramedics arrived. After giving a statement to police, McAulay was canned when she returned to the restaurant 2 1/2 hours later.

According to the Calgary Sun, owner Randy Saluk defended his decision to fire McAulay, saying, "she was supposed to be at work. ... We expect her to be working here when not on a delivery, to aid the cook and clean and cut cheese and answer the phone and not be driving around."

McAulay's story ran in newspapers in about two dozen U.S. states. In Canada, the story hit national newspapers, radio programs across the country and 24-hour TV stations talked about the Manitoba woman. The Guardian Unlimited in the UK also printed an article about McAulay's plight.

As a result, many readers of The Winnipeg Sun sent e-mails calling for a boycott of Frank's Pizza.
