NEW DELHI, India -- U.S. based restaurants Pizza Hut and McDonald's are heating up their efforts to reach India's billion-plus diners. Pizza Hut is pushing a spiced-up version of its Masala Pizzas, according to

"We're not here to change the Indian customer's taste buds," said Pankaj Batra, marketing director for Pizza Hut's India operations. "We're here to give him a top quality product with a taste and texture that appeals to him."

Pizza Hut, which has 34 locations in India, also offers Veggie Lover's and Spicy Indian pies, according to The company released a statement in May declaring 100 percent vegetarian products are used in Pizza Hut's vegetarian offerings in India (See story: Vegetarian means vegetarian in India, according to Pizza Hut). Beef or pork can be offensive to Hindus and Muslims.

McDonald's is offering diners a Maharaja Mac, a chicken patty-based offering, and an all-vegetarian Veggie Burger, according to CNN.
