• Scientist claims lycopene also fights breast cancer

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- After grabbing headlines for its ability to curb and fight prostate cancer, scientists claim that lycopene, found in high concentrations in tomato-based sauces, can do the same for diseases common to women.

According to Justfood.com, a 12-year study led by Harvard Medical School's Dr Edward Giovannucci, revealed that lycopene aids in warding off breast cancer and osteoporosis.

Giovannucci said that tomato sauces concentrated through thermal processing -- i.e., pizza sauce, ketchup and spaghetti sauce -- are rich sources of lycopene.

At least three similar studies published in the last two years have touted healthful benefits of tomato consumption.
