NEW YORK -- Pizzeria owner Pasquale Di Tillio used to sell 100 pizzas a day, but since the terrorist attacks of last September, his shop, located close to Ground Zero, sells only half that number.
But according to The New York Times, Len Adams, who owns a recruiting firm with four employees on lower Broadway, announced that he would hold weekly pizza parties in his office to help the parlor.
"It's small, but it's something," Adams told The Times.
Adams' efforts and other acts of kindness have evolved into a new matchmaking program called Adopt-a-Company. The program pairs struggling small businesses in New York City with civic-minded businesses.
New York's Economic Development Corporation announced the program in April, and more than 350 businesses have signed up.
Most of the matchmaking is being done through a Web site, www.adopt-a-company.org.
To be adopted, the small business must have fewer than 50 employees and have been adversely affected by Sept. 11. The sponsor can donate whatever it believes is helpful to the company.
