BOSTON -- A restaurant health inspector is facing allegations of demanding money and goods in exchange for allowing restaurants to pass inspections and stay open.
According to The Boston Globe, Juanita Kilgore, a Boston Inspectional Services employee, has worked as a health code enforcement officer for nearly two years. She has been suspended from her job and may face termination if found guilty of the alleged offenses.
In December, Kilgore is believe to have demanded money from employees at the South End House of Pizza in exchange for allowing the business to stay open. A month later she allegedly asked for and received $50 from Ho Gas at 67 Blue Hill Ave. in return for not writing code violations. In February, officials say Kilgore demanded cigarettes and money from the staff at the Yong Hon Restaurant, again in exchange for allowing it to stay open.
She also is accused of pouring bleach on a tray of chicken wings at the Taiwan Island Restaurant after a confrontation with the owner last November.
None of the restaurateurs involved would comment on the allegations.
Kilgore could not be reached for comment.
"We didn't want to look like we were hiding anything,' said John Dorsey, a spokesman for Inspectional Services. 'But we did a preliminary investigation and the facts speak for themselves."
