AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- Auckland police are hunting for a gunman who murdered a pizzeria counter worker and stole N.Z. $200 (about U.S. $90).
According to Ananova.com, Marcus Peter Doig, 23, was killed when a masked gunman burst into the Pakuranga Pizza Delivery Company and demanded money.
As Doig was gathering the money, the gunman shot Doig in the head. He died at the scene.
The gunman then tried to shoot Doig's co-worker, but he managed to avoid being hit.
"This does not have the hallmark of a robbery that's gone wrong, this was a brutal slaying of a young man," said Steve Rutherford, an Auckland detective inspector. "It is just pure luck that we don't have a double homicide on our hands."
Rutherford said Doig had a full-time job working at a bank, but was working at the pizza place part-time to raise money for an overseas trip.
The gunman is described as a male Maori or Polynesian in his mid-20s, whose manner was agitated and aggressive.
Nearby business owners said it was the first armed robbery in the area in memory. Now they are worried about their safety.
"Things seem to be getting worse and worse and I think the present government needs to do something about this," said shopkeeper Kanti Patel.
