WICHITA, Kan. -- Papa John's International Inc. (Nasdaq: PZZA) is testing deep-dish pizza in its Wichita stores.
According to Dow Jones Newswires, the Louisville, Ky.-based company's most famous franchisee, Pizza Hut co-founder Frank Carney, has pushed for a deep-dish product for several years. Now he'll get a chance to try it out in the same market where Pizza Hut was born.
Cost for a two-topping, 14-inch deep-dish pizza and a two-liter soda is $9.99.
To speed up service, the pizza is pre-formed, parbaked and finished in store conveyor ovens.
Papa John's currently offers thin and traditional crusts at its more than 2,900 pizza stores worldwide.
Carney, who franchises 131 Papa John's stores, was not immediately available for comment.
Papa John's spokesman Chris Sternberg told Dow Jones the test results will be monitored carefully before the company considers a wider roll-out of the product.
