ATLANTA -- If you ask the taste testers at Consumer Reports, Louisville, Ky.-based Papa John's International has the highest-quality pepperoni pizza served by a national chain.
In the magazine's January 2002 issue, an article on retail frozen pizzas included a brief mention of the taste test.
The reviewers ranked seven types of pepperoni pizza "in order of quality." Six pizzas, two each coming from Papa John's, Pizza Hut and Domino's Pizza, were labeled "very good," and a seventh, from Little Caesars, was dubbed "good."
The "very good" list was topped by Papa John's original crust, which the magazine called, "Very good, with an Italian-style crust and sauce that has notably fresh tomato flavor. Milder pepperoni flavor than most." Coming in second was the 2,900-store chain's thin-crust pizza.
Pizza Hut's thin-and-crispy pepperoni wound up third.
In other news, Papa John's 80 Atlanta-market stores were presented The Consumers Choice Award for Best Pizza Delivery on Dec. 10. The award was determined by a random survey of 1,350 Atlanta residents, which was conducted by the Consumers' Choice Institute and Market Facts. Locals rated the chain's service number-one among the area's fast-food outlets.
