Pizza Hut and Vegemite face a possible trademark ownership battle overseas regarding the newest version of the Aussie spread, according online Australian publiation PerthNow: The new "Vegemite Cheeseybite" name was just registered last Friday. To some, that name sounds a little too close to Pizza Hut's "Cheesy Bites Pizza."
"We confirm that Cheesy Bites Pizza is a very popular Pizza Hut product, which is exclusive to Pizza Hut and is a valuable trademark," a Pizza Hut spokeswoman said.
Pizza Hut's Cheesy Bites Pizza product has been trademarked since March 2006.
Kraft communications manager Simon Talbot wasn't phased by any possible legal action on the new name. Talbot said he was confident that "Vegemite Cheesybite" was different enough from Pizza Hut's Cheesy Bite moniker so as not to cause consumer confusion.
