Marco’s Pizza has ambitious plans to climb up the pizza ladder. The company is set to open its third location in the Columbus, Ohio, area Dec. 20. The new unit will be operated by franchisee Jason Gehring, who plans to open at least seven more shops throughout the market within the next five years.

The Toledo, Ohio-based pizza chain plans to add 900 locations throughout the next several years. Recently, Marco’s announced a plan to open 60 stores throughout Indiana.

Currently, Marco’s has more than 220 stores in 17 states and the Bahamas. Of those, 75 are located in northern Ohio, while 23 are in the Cincinnati area.

Nationally, the company is the 23rd-largest pizza chain based on 2009 sales of $102 million. In October, Marco's CEO Jack Butorac told that he wants the company to be in the top four.

To get there, Marco's is looking at making $10 million of the company’s own money available for further expansion. Butorac said innovative financing programs are one way to expand sufficiently. He adds that Marco's is ready for growth because it has quality food and operating procedures in place that allow its products to be made consistently throughout the system.

According to Marco’s hometown newspaper, The Toledo Blade, franchisees have already committed to help open more than 1,200 stores within the next 10 years.

The company has about 35 representatives throughout the country who are responsible for most of the company’s expected 1,200 store openings. The expansion plan entails the Cincinnati area, as well as Indiana, Texas, Virginia, Northern California and Oklahoma.
