Every year, millions of eyes are glued to the Super Bowl just for its commercials. This year, they’ll be able to see a Pizza Hut ad for the first time.
The pizza chain will make its inaugural appearance in the Super Bowl commercial lineup, with one spot produced by Interpublic Group of Cos.’ Martin Agency. It will air during the first half of the game, which is set for Feb. 6 on the Fox network.
Pizza Hut has been the presenting sponsor on the NFL Network’s “GameDay Morning” show in the past, and has run ads leading up to the game featuring celebrities such as Jessica Simpson and Donald Trump; however, it has never featured a spot during the actual Super Bowl.
This year’s Super Bowl commercial list is already sold out, and will feature mostly car companies, including General Motors, Chrysler, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Volkswagen, Hyundai and Kia.
Kurt Kane, Pizza Hut’s vice president of advertising, made the decision to change course for this year's game.

"In the past we've focused on a specific product on Super Bowl Sunday, so our strategy was to advertise that product pre-game, giving our customers time to order it," said Kane. "This year, we will be focusing on the brand during the in-game spot with a fully integrated plan. We'll be highlighting the role that the Pizza Hut brand plays in customers' lives beyond the game and throughout the year."
