Domino’s Pizza units in the United Kingdom and Ireland have gotten quite a boost from online and iPhone orders. The company’s 2010 sales were up almost 20 percent, and more than one-third of all orders are now placed via the company’s website and iPhone app.
According to the Daily Telegraph, full-year sales in 2010 increased by 19.2 percent from 2009.
Online and phone app orders jumped 63 percent in that timeframe. The iPhone app was launched in the U.K. in September and has accounted for more than 1 million pounds (about $1.5 million) of sales. A similar app launch is around the corner for the Android.
Social media and social responsibility also have provided a boost for the company. Domino’s U.K. has more than 109,000 “fans” on Facebook, and rewards one of them with a free pizza each Friday. The company delivered 500 slices of free pizza to stranded travelers who were snowed in at Gatwick Airport before Christmas.
The total number of Domino’s units in the U.K. is 665. The company opened 57 new restaurants in 2010.
