Year after year, pizzas have proven to be the perfect food for love. The crust can be manipulated into a heart shape, and the offering itself is ideal for sharing.
Plenty of operators are taking advantage of Valentine's Day – and, in some cases American Heart Month – by launching special heart-shaped pizzas to help Cupid's cause. Below are some of those promotions.
Papa John's debuted its heart-shaped pizza three years ago, and sold more than 60,000 of them last year. The chain is predicting sales of 75,000 this year.
The thin crust pizza is available for $15, which includes one topping and a Cinnapie.
Papa Murphy's has brought back its HeartBaker Pizza.
The pepperoni pizza is available through Feb. 14 for $6. Prices and participation for the HeartBaker vary nationwide.
Papa Romano's Pizza
Papa Romano's Pizza is once again bringing back its "Love Pizza" for the holiday. The heart-shaped pies sell for $5.99, and are available in "Papa's Romance Package," which includes two heart-shaped, one-topping Love Pizzas, a medium salad and two chocolate chip cookies for $16.99. Papa Romano's has more than 40 locations in Michigan and Colorado.
Chicago staple Lou Malnatis will deliver its heart-shaped cookie and heart-shaped deep dish pizza anywhere in the country for $49.99. The package is available through Feb. 15 and includes a cheese or sausage pizza.
The company also features a two pizza, two chocolate heart pops packages for shipment for $65.99.
Boston's Restaurant & Sports Bar
In honor of February as American Heart Month, Boston's Restaurant & Sports Bar will serve its heart-shaped pizzas from Feb. 11 to 14.
The restaurant will also donate $1 to the cardiovascular research program of Community Healthcare System for every medium or large pizza sold through Feb. 26. Diners will also have the opportunity to purchase paper hearts for $1 each.
Canada's Boston Pizza
Ontario-based Boston Pizza will offer a heart-shaped pie on Feb. 14 at all 345 locations, with $1 from each sale going toward the Boston Pizza Foundation in support of the chain's national charity partners. The pizzas are available in individual, small and medium sizes, on classic or multigrain dough.
"Sharing a heart-shaped pizza from Boston Pizza is a great way for our guests to have some Valentine's Day fun with their loved ones while also supporting great charities," says Steve Silverstone, EVP of Marketing at Boston Pizza International.
Boston Pizza expects to make more than 50,000 heart-shaped pizzas on Valentine's Day this year. This marks the 20th anniversary of the Boston Pizza Valentine's Day promotion.
The Boston Pizza Foundation raises funds for a variety of local, regional and national charities across Canada, including the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada, Kids Help Phone and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Canada's Pizza Pizza
Toronto-based Pizza Pizza is offering a heart-shaped Valentine's Veggie Delight pizza now through Feb. 20. The specialty pizza includes Roma tomatoes, green peppers and 100-percent mozzarella cheese served on a heart-shaped crust, equivalent in size to a traditional medium pizza.
"Our team at Pizza Pizza takes Valentine's Day to heart," said Pat Finelli, chief marketing officer for Pizza Pizza. "Sharing a special meal is an important part of this occasion, and we're excited to be able to help with Valentine's plans across the country."
Randy's Premier Pizza
Oakdale, Minn.-based Randy's Premier Pizza claims its Valentine's Day yields more sales than the Super Bowl because of its heart-shaped options. Leading up to the occasion, about 50 percent of all orders are for the restaurant's half-baked, heart-shaped options.
The pizzas are made thin crust, pan, Chicago-style deep dish or Chicago stuffed. They're available all year round. Nationwide shipping is available, and if you miss Valentine's Day, Randy's offers a Clover Leaf pizza for St. Patrick's Day.
In lieu of the specialty options, Pizza Hut is doing something different to celebrate Cupid's aim. Its "Tie the Knot" promotion includes the chance to win a wedding package worth $10,010. The package includes a ruby ring, limo service, flowers, fireworks show, photographer and videographer. The promotion runs through Feb. 14.
John's Incredible Pizza Co.
Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.-based John's Incredible Pizza Co. is hosting a Red Carpet Valentine's Day Party Feb. 14 at its 10 locations in California and the Portland, Ore., market.
John's Valentine's Day "Star Package" party guests will receive one hour of free rides, a $10 FunCard, an "I Love John's" tattoo, and a keepsake picture frame. In addition, Star Package party guests will enjoy John's all-you-can-eat soup, salad, baked potato, pasta, pizza and dessert buffet.
