Detroit Style Pizza Co. will offer tours of its new pizzerias this summer. Designed and conducted by World Champion Pizza Maker Shawn Randazzo, the tour is offered at the company's St. Clair Shores and Clinton Township locations in Michigan.
The tour will feature Randazzo telling the story of Detroit style pizza and revealing pizza facts (for example, Detroit style pizza is nicknamed "upside down" or "red top" pizza because the signature red sauce is ladled on after baking).
Groups are guided through the Detroit Style Pizza Co. kitchen, where they learn about the techniques that go into making pizza dough and how to properly position toppings for even baking.
Additionally, kids will have the opportunity to make their own pizzas. And, while they're waiting for their pizzas to bake, they can compete in a box folding contest. The top three box folders win Detroit Style Pizza Co. gift cards.
"A lot of excitement builds up for the box folding contest, but the greatest part of the tour for me is getting to watch the kids enjoy the pizzas they made. They're proud of their masterpieces, and they should be," Randazzo said. "I'm proud that we are able to share an experience that's a blast for the kids and even fun and interesting for adults. Everyone leaves with a little knowledge about Detroit history, a sense of accomplishment and a full belly."
The Detroit Style Pizza Co. Tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and is ideal for groups of 10 to 15 individuals. The fee is $10 per person.
