Boston-based Upper Crust Pizza was auctioned off Wednesday, nearly three months after the chain filed for bankruptcy.
According to the Boston Globe, Ditmars Ltd., a private equity firm won bids for four restaurants, and an attorney claimed the Harvard Square location. That same attorney filed a lawsuit against the chain's founder last year for alleged labor violations.
One of the plaintiffs in a separate 2010 lawsuit against Upper Crust filed on behalf of immigrant employees, also partnered with an investor to buy a Cambridge, Mass., location. They are considering naming the restaurant "The Just Crust."
Boston Restaurant Associates, which operates another pizza chain, acquired the Upper Crust near Boston's Fenway Park. A real estate and hospitality investment firm veteran purchased the Upper Crust location on Boston's Newbury Street. An Upper Crust franchisee submitted a bid for Boston's Hingham neighborhood location, and the landlords of the State Street unit in Boston and the Washington, D.C., location bought back their leases during the auction.
The auction bids were for leases and equipment, but did not include rights to the Upper Crust name.
