Laguna Beach, Calif.-based zpizza is one of the pioneers in the "healthier pizza" trend. As most other concepts shied away from the idea, fearful that it would compromise such an iconic product, founder Sid Fanarof was coming up with ingredients such as MSG-free pepperoni and a gluten-free crust. The brand was one of the first to join the Kids LiveWell, a nationwide initiative launched by the National Restaurant Association and Healthy Dining. Plus, it was quick to embrace mobile technology for its gift card and loyalty programs. Within the last two years, the brand has been undergoing a makeover. Company-owned stores, along with some franchisees, are being remodeled with a minimalist design and bright colors. A new zpizza logo is on menus, marketing material and pizza boxes.
