Murraysville, Penn.-based Fox's Pizza Den, which just celebrated its 40th anniversary, opened its first restaurant in 1971 and started franchising in 1974. Now there are units in more than 30 states and exclusive territories are available for qualified operators. Along with pizzas, the menu features Stromboli, hoagies and a sandwich on a pizza wedge concept called wedgies. The company recently began adding a full-service deli to some locations, featuring made-to-order sandwiches, party trays and other treats such as ice cream. Founder Jim Fox helped Carnegie Mellon University's robotic team develop a pizza-making robot to enable physically disabled entrepreneurs to own and operate their own shops.
