To celebrate Earth Month, Canada's Pizza Pizza is bringing back its Cells for Slices campaign. Throughout April, customers visiting the 365 traditional restaurant locations in Ontario, Winnipeg and Regina will be able to trade their unwanted handheld devices in exchange for a free pepperoni slice.

The list of acceptable devices now includes cameras, adapters, tablets and iPods as well as mobile and smartphones. All proceeds from the recycling of these devices benefit Food Banks Canada as part of its Phones for Food program.

Many consumers are unaware of the disposal process of phones and devices. Some devices and their batteries contain hazardous substances and can be harmful if not recycled properly.

"We're offering an easy way for people to dispose of their old and unwanted devices in a way that rewards our customers," said Pat Finelli, chief marketing officer for Pizza Pizza. "The Cells for Slices program contributes to a great program run by the good people at Food Banks Canada and is especially beneficial for the preservation of the environment and the individuals and families they serve."

Launched in 2004, Pizza Pizza's Cells for Slices program has collected more than 5,600 used mobile devices to date.

In the late 1990s, Pizza Pizza worked with several municipalities to pilot programs that would add pizza boxes to recycling programs. Today, the vast majority of municipal recycling programs include pizza boxes.
