Just as social media took the industry on the ride of its life, mobile payments is poised to be the next big thing. The industry is so new, however, that there are still many competing formats that help restaurants allow their guests to pay by smartphone, said Cherryh Butler, editor of FastCasual.com and host of the annual Fast Casual Executive Summit.
"It can be confusing for restaurant operators trying to decide which platform to choose," she said.
That's why, Butler said, this year's Summit, Oct. 13-15 in New Orleans, is featuring a panel on mobile payments. The session, "Mobile Payments 101" is at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 14 and will feature an overview on the different platforms available and how they work. Attendees will also hear from two restaurant operators who have rolled out successful platforms: Matt Pyles, operations manager at Barbacoa Mexican Grill, and Chet Kenisell, president of Sugar On Top Corporation, owner of Gigi's Cupcakes Georgetown and Cedar Park.
"Credit cards used to be a mysterious piece of plastic, and look how common they are today," Pyles said. "Mobile payments are no different. Restaurant operators should take the time to learn about mobile payments and to not shy away from embracing them in the near future."
Geoff Murtaugh, VP of technical services for Micros, and Gordon Saussy, consulting executive for Isis Mobile Commerce, will also be on the panel to answer technical questions.
