In celebration of National Pizza Month, as well as Halloween, one of the top five pizza-selling days of the year, has unveiled its consumer pizza survey.

As part of that survey, 81 percent of more than 1,000 respondents said they prefer independently owned pizza restaurants to chain pizzerias.

"Americans love pizza, and especially piping hot from the oven of their favorite local pizzeria," said Christopher Krohn, president and chief marketing officer. "Pizza is such a versatile food that each restaurant can feature its own signature style, from family favorites like cheesy pepperoni, to classic Italian tomato and basil Margarita, to creative regional interpretations like Thai peanut chicken."

Data from's consumer pizza survey suggests that pizza's popularity can be attributed to its convenience and variations. Also, 69 percent of the total respondents said they use coupons or deals at least some of the time when ordering pizza.

Other survey highlights include:

  • Chosen crusts: Thin and crunchy (40 percent); New York style (39 percent); pan pizza (15 percent).
  • Specialty pizza preferences: Meat lovers (24 percent); Margarita (23 percent); white pizza (18 percent).
  • Favorite toppings: Pepperoni, cheese, mushroom, respectively.
  • Pizza consumers' drink of choice: Soda (46 percent); beer (27 percent); water (21 percent).

To date, there are approximately 70,000 pizzerias in the U.S., the survey notes.
