Scientists at the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center in Massachusetts are reportedly in the process of developing a recipe for pizza that doesn't require refrigeration.
According to the Associated Press, the pizza has the shelf life of up to three years. Soldiers have been requesting pizza MREs since they were first created in 1981.
Scientists have been working on the pizza recipe for nearly two years, but have run into a moisture roadblock from the tomato sauce, cheese and toppings. They began using ingredients, such as sugar, salt and syrups, that bind to water and prevent moisture from happening, and also "tweaked the acidity of the sauce, cheese and dough to make it harder for oxygen and bacteria to thrive," the story said.
