Kristine Middleton, corporate outreach manager for The Humane Society, said she will address Domino's Pizza executives on April 28 during the pizza company's annual shareholder meeting in Ann Arbor, Mich.
"We're asking the company to implement some very basic but important animal welfare improvements, similar to what many top food companies have already done," she said. The Humane Society is a shareholder of the pizza company.
Middleton's speech will mainly target what she said is the company's practice of using pork from suppliers that confine breeding pigs in gestation crates. According to Middleton, seven states, including Michigan, Domino's home state, have passed laws making it illegal to confine pigs in gestation crates.
Many limited-service restaurant chains such Burger King, CKE Restaurants, Wendy's, Chipotle, Panera Bread and Sonic are all phasing in the use of gestation crate-free pork. Middleton could not confirm any pizza chains that are phasing out gestation crate grown pork.
"We're in various states of communication with various chains, including pizza chains, but none that are ready to make announcements," she said.
