A corporate lesson in community building
It was a shocking scenario: Four policemen gunned down in Lakewood, Wash., while on their laptops in a popular coffee shop.  But Papa John's area pizzerias found a way to help redeem hope in the area by donating profits of 42 Puget Sound area locations to the officers' families, offering the pizza industry a lesson in community building.

The company released a statement quantifying the donation those restaurants will make to benefit the families of the four fallen police officers through the Lakewood Police Independent Guild (LPIG) Benevolent Fund: $125,855.  The donation includes 100 percent of profits from Dec. 8 and Dec. 9 from the restaurants and additional donations made by consumers at the restaurants. The well-received two-day donation campaign was so popular, some stores ran out of supplies mid-day.

"The response from the good people of Seattle was simply incredible," said Peter Ogg, operating partner for PJ Northwest, a franchisee of Papa John's International, Inc. "Stories about the generosity and compassion of our customers will be swirling around our system for weeks to come. We just want to say thanks to everyone for their patience and for coming out to support the families of the fallen officers."

Papa John's spokeswoman Trish Muldoon said the company plans to place a "thank you" ad to the participating community next week.

Quick Facts:
Papa John's completed more than 21,000 orders during the fundraiser.

More than 1,200 Papa John's team members and volunteers participated in the 48-hour effort.

The Portland Quality Control Center that produces dough for the Papa John's pizzas worked around the clock to produce additional dough for the pizzas. Two additional semi-truck loads of food product were shipped in overnight on Tuesday night to accommodate as many orders as possible on Wednesday.
