CHICAGO -- Block cheese prices fell to a four-month low on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange last week, with prices averaging just under $1.16 per pound for the trading week ended May 1, off 2 cents from the previous week.
Block cheese prices closed at just above $1.17 per pound Monday and just above $1.15 per pound the rest of the week.
Prices are off 79 cents, or 41 percent, compared with this time last year, when block cheese averaged $1.95 per pound. Wheat Wheat prices for May delivery continued to rise last week, closing at $6.95 per bushel Friday on the Minneapolis Grain Exchange, up 30 cents from $6.65 per bushel the last day of the previous trading week. Prices had closed at $6.58 per bushel Monday, $6.63 per bushel Tuesday, $6.79 per bushel Wednesday and just above $6.81 per bushel on Thursday.
Gasoline and diesel fuel The nationwide average for regular unleaded gasoline was $2.07 per gallon May 4, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service, up 2 cents from the previous week. Prices are up slightly from an average of $2.04 per gallon a month ago and off 43 percent from an average of $3.61 per gallon this time last year. Mid-range unleaded averaged $2.20 per gallon while premium unleaded stood at $2.28 per gallon. The nationwide average price for diesel fuel stood at $2.25 per gallon May 4, off a penny from last week. Diesel prices are off 47 percent from an average of $4.24 per gallon this time last year. The direction of natural gas prices was mixed for the latest report week, according to the Energy Information Administration, although the changes were relatively small. The Henry Hub spot price decreased by 5 cents per million Btu to $3.43 from $3.48 last week.
Prices in the Northeast were $3.90 per MMBtu on April 29.
Pizza company stocks
Shares in Pizza Hut parent Yum! Brands Inc opened at $33.48 on May 4, off slightly compared with last Monday's open of $33.71. YUM traded at a 52-week high of $41.59 in May 2008 and a 52-week low of $21.50 in November 2008.
Domino's opened at $9.45, up 16 percent compared with last week's open of $8.17. Over the past 52 weeks, DPZ has traded as high as $14.20 in May 2008 and as low as $2.61 in November 2008.
Papa John's stock opened at $26.50, off slightly compared with last Monday's open of $26.57. PZZA traded at a 52-week high of $30.68 in September 2008 and a 52-week low of $12.78 in November 2008.
Shares in CEC Entertainment Inc., parent company of Chuck E. Cheese restaurants, opened at $31.21, up slightly compared with last Monday's open of $31.48. CEC traded at a 52-week high of $39.59 in May 2008 and a 52-week low of $12.96 in November 2008.
California Pizza Kitchen opened at $15.42 on May 4, off 6.7 percent compared with last week's open of $16.53. Over the past 52 weeks, CPKI has traded as high as $17.44 in mid-April and as low as $5.24 in November 2008.
Pizza Inn opened at $1.25, off 14 percent compared with last Monday's open of $1.45. PZZI traded at a 52-week high of $2.83 in October 2008 and a 52-week low of 98 cents in April 2009.
