Pizza shares generally rose this past week with Domino's Pizza and Pizza Inn outshining competitors at a $2.49 and 43 cent leap, respectively. Natural gas remained relatively consistent, as did unleaded gasoline.
Cheese jumped 15 cents from two weeks ago and wheat declined 20 cents in one week.
Here's a glimpse at the market this week.
Average block cheese prices jumped six cents from last week on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, coming in at an average of $2.14. This is 15 cents higher than the average two weeks ago, at $1.99.
Prices were $2.09 Monday, $2.11 Tuesday, $2.13 Wednesday, $2.19 Thursday and $2.22 Friday.
The week's average for wheat was $6.09 on the Minneapolis Grain exchange, down 20 cents from the week prior, at $6.29. Two weeks ago wheat averaged $6.15.
Last week's prices closed at $6.16 Monday, $6.09 Tuesday, $6.04 Wednesday, $6.05 Thursday and $6.12 Friday.
Gasoline and diesel fuel
Monday's nationwide average for regular unleaded gasoline was $3.45, down two cents from the previous week, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service.
Prices are also down from $3.58 a month ago and from eight cents this time last year, when consumers were paying $3.53 at the pump.
Mid-range unleaded is $3.65, while Monday's premium unleaded price was $3.82.
The nationwide average for diesel fuel is $3.81, a drop from $3.82 last week. Diesel prices are also down from $3.87 a month ago and from the same price a year ago.
Natural gas spot prices remained relatively unchanged at most trading locations across the country (August 6 – 13). The Henry Hub decreased by 2 cents/MMBtu, moving from $3.89/MMBtu August 6 to $3.87/MMBtu August 13.
At the New York Mercantile Exchange (Nymex), the September contract decreased by 10 cents/MMBtu, beginning the report week at $3.933/MMBtu August 6 and settling at $3.831/MMBtu August 13.
Pizza company stocks
Shares in Pizza Hut parent Yum! Brands Inc. climbed again to $ 71.60 Friday, up from $71.48 the previous close and $70.18 two weeks ago.
Domino's finished last week at $74.55, up from $72.06 the previous week. Domino's traded as low as $10.99 in June 2010.
Papa John's finished at $40.42 Friday, down from $41.01 the previous week. Papa John's traded at a 52-week low of $22.78 in July 2010.
Shares in Papa Murphy's closed at $8.95 Friday, up from $8.70 the previous Friday. In its fourth month on the NASDAQ, FRSH’s high/low is $12.10 and $8.08, respectively.
Pizza Inn turned in at $7.99 Friday, up 43 cents from the previous Friday at $7.56. The company’s 52-week high was $9.09 a year ago. Its low was $5.38, also a year ago.
