Prices of cheese, wheat down

Average block cheese prices dropped 6 cents last week on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange to $2.05. The previous week's average was $2.11.

Cheese prices closed at $2.10 Monday, 2.06 Tuesday, $2.03 Wednesday, $2 Thursday and $2.06 Friday.


Wheat prices came in at $8.24 last week on the Minneapolis Grain Exchange, a 30-cent drop from last week’s $8.54. The decrease comes after last week’s 20-cent increase from the previous week’s $8.34.

Wheat closed at $8.14 Tuesday, $8.11 Wednesday, $8.21 Thursday and $8.84 Thursday and $8.24 Friday.

Gasoline and diesel fuel

Monday's nationwide average for regular unleaded gasoline was $3.68, a 5-cent increase over last week’s $3.63, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service.

Prices are also up from $3.66 a month ago, and remain much higher than last year, when consumers were paying $2.72 at the pump.

Mid-range unleaded is $3.80, a 4-cent increase from last week’s price of $3.76, while today's premium unleaded price is $3.92, a 6-cent increase over last week’s $3.86.

The nationwide average for diesel fuel is $3.94, 3 cents higher than last week’s price of $3.91. Although diesel prices are down from $3.98 a month ago, they remain up from $2.95 a year ago.

Natural Gas

Nearly all pricing points were up somewhat for the week on a heat wave that affected nearly half the country’s population, according to national news reports. Despite the record heat, the Henry Hub price increased a modest 9 cents per million Btu (MMBtu) over the week (2.0 percent) to close at $4.43 per MMBtu on July 13.

Pizza company stocks

Pizza Hut parent Yum! Brands Inc. dropped to $55.12 from last week’s $55.85. The company hit its 52-week high two weeks ago when shares were $56.72. Yum! traded at a 52-week low of $38.53 in July 2010.

Domino's trend of hitting 52-week highs several weeks in a row came to an end as shares dropped to $25.31 this week, down from $26.07. Shares are still substantially higher over this time last year when the company traded as low as $12.21.

Papa John's dropped again this week, coming in at $31.59, down from last week’s $31.91. The company hit its 52-week high six weeks ago at $34.12. Papa John's traded at a 52-week low of $22.78 in July 2010.

Shares in CEC Entertainment Inc., parent company of Chuck E. Cheese restaurants, fell for the second week in a row. It closed Friday at $41.07. Its 52-week high was two weeks ago when shares were $42.18. CEC traded as low as $30.44 in August 2010.

California Pizza Kitchen closed at $18.51, up 4 cents from $18.47 the previous week. CPKI traded as high as $20.79 in May 2010 and as low as $13.19 in July 2010.

Pizza Inn dropped to $2.85, bringing its four weeks of new highs to an end. It finished the previous week at $3.26. It traded as low as $1.77 in May 2010.
