LOUISVILLE, Ky. — What a difference a year makes.
Papa John's announced that domestic system-wide comparable sales for its second quarter (ended June 26, 2005) rose 6.1 percent (composed of a 7.6 percent increase at company-owned units and a 5.6 percent increase at franchise units). Last year, the No. 3 chain's sales were barely negative in the period.
According to a regulatory filing, this year's second quarter featured two system-wide promotions supported by national television, compared to one such promotion in the same period last year.
Interestingly, the company noted that the June implementation of delivery fees at most of its 571-company-owned stores had a low-single digit favorable impact on comps for the quarter.
June also was a stellar month for the chain. For the five weeks ended June 26, comps rose 6 percent (composed of an 8.9 percent increase at company-owned stores and a 5 percent increase at franchise stores). Last year's June sales came in at plus-1.9 percent.
Total system-wide international comps increased 12.7 percent for June and 14.2 percent for the quarter, on a constant U.S. dollar basis.
