2Q profit drops at Alsea, Domino's Pizza franchisee in Mexico

MEXICO CITY -- Alsea SA, master franchisee of about 475 Domino's Pizza stores in Mexico and Brazil, reported its net profits declined to 25.6 million pesos (U.S. $2.43 million) for its second quarter, ended June 30, 2003. In the comparable period last year, Alsea's net profits were 43.3 million pesos (U.S. $4.1 million).

According to Dow Jones Newswires, overall sales for the period, however, were up slightly, 683.2 million pesos (U.S. $64.8 million), compared to 669.4 million pesos (U.S. $63.6 million) last year.

For the first six months of 2003, Alsea's net profits were nearly half of those returned the year prior. For the period, ended June 30, 2003, net profit was 52.8 million pesos (U.S. $5 million), compared to 90.8 million pesos (U.S. $8.6 million) in 2002.

Sales rose slightly for the period to 1.3 billion pesos (U.S. $123.5 million), compared to 1.29 billion pesos (U.S. $122.5 million) during the same period in 2002.

In addition to Domino's, Alsea franchises Starbucks Coffee and Burger King units. In total, it operates 531 foodservice units.
