Back Yard Burgers no longer co-branding with Pizza Hut

Oct. 22, 2002

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Back Yard Burgers Inc. (Nasdaq: BYBI) is switching its multi-brand development with Louisville, Ky.-based Yum! Brands Inc. from Pizza Hut to Taco Bell.

The company expects to remove its two existing co-branded restaurants with Pizza Hut, according to Business First of Louisville.

"Based upon multi-brand testing to date, the company and Yum! have concluded that the Back Yard Burgers brand is better suited for Yum's quick-service restaurant environment than its casual dining," a company release said.

Back Yard Burgers, which specializes in charbroiled, freshly prepared food, operates and franchises quick-service restaurants in 17 states. The Memphis, Tenn.-based company reported record revenue and net income for the third quarter and first nine months of 2002.

Its third-quarter net income rose to $386,000, or 8 cents per share, a 40.4 percent increase compared with the same period last year. Revenue for the quarter ended Sept. 28 was $8.77 million, a 10.8 percent increase compared with the same period last year, according to Business First.

The company credited the addition of four company-owned restaurants for the increased revenue.
