RICHMOND, British Columbia -- Boston Pizza served more than 44,000 heart-shaped pizzas for its annual Valentine's Day fundraising campaign to benefit The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
According to a release, the chain's 160 Canadian stores set a corporate record by raising over $162,000 (U.S. $110,467) in this year's campaign through sales of the pie, plus additional sponsorship opportunities.
The effort pushed the company past the million-dollar mark in total donations made to the charity over the past 11 years. Its current donation total is $1,142,678 (U.S. $779,187).
The fund-raising campaign generates $1 from the sale of each heart-shaped pizza, and an additional $1 from the sale of every red paper heart sold during the two weeks prior to Feb. 14, at all 160 Boston Pizza restaurants in Canada.
"This is a tremendous accomplishment by all of our franchisees and their employees," said Boston Pizza president and COO, Mike Cordoba. "This makes us all very proud and signifies to us how well supported our efforts are in the local communities that we serve."
