Commodities update - Week of April 13, 2009

CHICAGO -- Block cheese prices on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange were off slightly last week, averaging slightly under $1.26 per pound for the shortened trading week ended April 3, off 3 cents from an average of $1.29 per pound the previous week.
 
The trading floor of the CME was closed in observance of Good Friday.   Block cheese prices closed at $1.28 per pound Monday, just above $1.25 Tuesday and Wednesday, and just above $1.23 per pound Thursday.   Prices are off 59 cents, or 32 percent, compared with this time last year, when block cheese averaged $1.85 per pound.   Wheat   Wheat prices for May delivery rose steadily last week, closing at just above $6.44 per bushel Thursday on the Minneapolis Grain Exchange. Prices had closed at just above $6.69 per bushel Monday, just under $6.62 per bushel Tuesday and just under $6.57 per bushel Wednesday.
 
The MGE was closed Friday.   Gasoline and diesel fuel   The nationwide average for regular unleaded gasoline was $2.05 per gallon April 13, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service, up a penny from the previous week.   Prices are up 7 percent from an average of $1.92 per gallon a month ago and off 39 percent from an average of $3.37 per gallon this time last year. Mid-range unleaded averaged $2.18 per gallon while premium unleaded stood at $2.26 per gallon.   The nationwide average price for diesel fuel stood at $2.27 per gallon April 13, up 2 cents from last week. Diesel prices are off 45 percent from an average of $4.10 per gallon this time last year.   Natural gas
 
Natural gas spot prices declined at most market locations in the lower 48 states, with decreases ranging up to 40 cents per million Btu, according to the Energy Information Administration.
 
Prices at the Henry Hub fell by 6 cents per MMBtu, or about 2 percent, to $3.50.
 
Prices in the Northeast stood at $4.18 per MMBtu on April 8, off 2 cents compared with $4.64 the previous week.
 
Pizza company stocks
 
Shares in Pizza Hut parent Yum! Brands Inc opened at $30.35 on April 13, off 5 percent compared with last Monday's open of $29.79. YUM traded at a 52-week high of $41.73 in May 2008 and a 52-week low of $21.50 in November 2008.
 
Domino's opened at $7.36, up 6 percent compared with last week's open of $6.97. Over the past 52 weeks, DPZ has traded as high as $14.20 in April 2008 and as low as $2.61 in November 2008.
 
Papa John's stock opened at $24.77, up 5 percent compared with last Monday's open of $23.69. PZZA traded at a 52-week high of $30.68 in September 2008 and a 52-week low of $12.78 in November 2008.
 
Shares in CEC Entertainment Inc., parent company of Chuck E. Cheese restaurants, opened at $30.75, up 10 percent compared with last Monday's open of $28.00. CEC traded at a 52-week high of $39.59 in May 2008 and a 52-week low of $12.96 in November 2008.
 
California Pizza Kitchen opened at $14.79 on April 13, up 4 percent compared with last week's open of $14.19. Over the past 52 weeks, CPKI has traded as high as $16.91 in May 2008 and as low as $5.24 in November 2008.
 
Pizza Inn opened at $1.10, up 3 percent compared with last Monday's open of $1.07. PZZI traded at a 52-week high of $2.93 in April 2008 and a 52-week low of 98 cents in April 2009.
