Commodities update -- Week of Feb. 22, 2010

Cheese
 
Block cheese prices trended downward last week on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, averaging just above $1.44 per pound for the shortened trading week ended Feb. 19. Prices were off 6 cents from the previous week.
 
The CME was closed Feb. 15 for President's Day.
 
Prices closed at $1.48 on Tuesday, just above $1.44 on Wednesday, just under $1.43 on Thursday and just above $1.42 on Friday. Prices are up 13 cents, or 10 percent, compared with this time last year, when block cheese averaged $1.31 per pound.
 
Wheat
 
Wheat closed at just above $5.03 per bushel Friday on the Minneapolis Grain Exchange, up 3 cents from the previous week's close of $5.05.
 
Prices for wheat closed at just above $5.20 Tuesday, $5.11 per bushel Wednesday and just under $5.03 per bushel Thursday.
 
Gasoline and diesel fuel
 
The nationwide average for regular unleaded gasoline was $2.65 per gallon Feb. 22, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service, up 3 cents from the previous week.
 
Prices are off 3 percent from an average of $2.72 per gallon a month ago and up 38 percent from an average of $1.92 per gallon this time last year. Mid-range unleaded currently averages $2.81 per gallon while premium unleaded as of Feb. 22 stood at $2.91 per gallon.
 
The nationwide average price for diesel fuel stood at $2.84 per gallon Feb. 22, up 2 cents from last week. Diesel prices are up 25 percent from an average of $2.28 per gallon this time last year.
 
Natural gas
 
Natural gas prices continued their decline across much of the country for the week ended Feb. 17, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Natural gas spot prices registered net decreases at almost all locations in the lower 48 States.
 
The Henry Hub spot price ended the report week yesterday 1 cent lower, at $5.47 per million Btu (MMBtu).   Pizza company stocks
 
Shares in Pizza Hut parent Yum! Brands Inc. closed at $33.79 on Feb.19, up 40 cents compared with the previous week's close of $33.39. YUM traded at a 52-week high of $36.96 in June 2009 and a 52-week low of $23.37 in March 2009.
 
Domino's closed at $12.28, up 81 cents compared with the previous Friday's close of $11.47. DPZ has traded as high as $12.50 in February 2010 and as low as $4.76 in January 2009, over the past 52 weeks.
 
Papa John's stock closed at $23.02, up $1.05 compared with the previous Friday's close of $21.97. PZZA traded at a 52-week high of $29.25 in May 2009 and a 52-week low of $19.10 in February 2009.
 
Shares in CEC Entertainment Inc., parent company of Chuck E. Cheese restaurants, closed at $34.68, up $1.08 compared with the previous week's close of $33.60. CEC traded at a 52-week high of $35.53 in January 2010 and a 52-week low of $19.50 in March 2009.
 
California Pizza Kitchen closed at $15.07 on Feb. 19, up $1.35 from the previous week's close of $13.72. CPKI traded as high as $17.44 in mid-April and as low as $9.41 in March 2009.
 
Pizza Inn closed at $1.70 on Feb. 19, up 5 cents from the previous week's close of $1.65. PZZI traded at a 52-week high of $2.25 in June 2009 and a 52-week low of 98 cents in April 2009.
