Commodities update - Week of July 20, 2009

CHICAGO -- Block cheese prices on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange averaged slightly above $1.11 per pound for the trading week ended July 17, virtually unchanged from the previous week. However, prices did rise dramatically the last two days of the trading week.
 
Block cheese closed at $1.09 per pound Monday, slightly under $1.09 per pound Tuesday and just under $1.10 per pound Wednesday, rising to a close of just above $1.14 per pound Thursday and Friday.
 
Prices are off 84 cents, or 43 percent, compared with this time last year, when block cheese averaged $1.95 per pound.   Wheat   Wheat for July delivery closed at just above $6.21 per bushel Monday and $6.18 per bushel Tuesday on the Minneapolis Grain Exchange. Wheat for September delivery closed at $6.19 per bushel Wednesday, $6.15 per bushel Thursday and just above $6.16 per bushel on Friday.   Gasoline and diesel fuel   The nationwide average for regular unleaded gasoline was $2.46 per gallon July 20, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service, off 7 cents from the previous week.   Prices are off 9 percent from an average of $2.69 per gallon a month ago and off 40 percent from an average of $4.08 per gallon this time last year. Mid-range unleaded averaged $2.62 per gallon while premium unleaded stood at $2.71 per gallon.   The nationwide average price for diesel fuel stood at $2.54 per gallon July 20, off 3 cents from last week. Diesel prices are off 47 percent from an average of $4.83 per gallon this time last year.   Natural gas
 
Natural gas spot prices rose last week in all trading locations, according to the Energy Information Administration. Price increases ranged between 6 cents and 48 cents per million Btu, with the biggest increases occurring in the Rocky Mountain region.
 
During the report week, the spot price at the Henry Hub increased 15 cents, or 5 percent, to $3.37 per MMBtu.   Pizza company stocks   Shares in Pizza Hut parent Yum! Brands Inc. closed at $33.61 on July 17, off $1.37 compared with the previous week's close of $34.98. YUM traded at a 52-week high of $40.25 in September 2008 and a 52-week low of $21.50 in November 2008.   Domino's closed at $7.91, up 28 cents compared with the previous Friday's close of $7.63. Over the past 52 weeks, DPZ has traded as high as $14.20 in August 2008 and as low as $2.61 in November 2008.   Papa John's stock closed at $26.53, up 4 cents compared with the previous Friday's close of $26.49. PZZA traded at a 52-week high of $30.68 in September 2008 and a 52-week low of $12.78 in November 2008.   Shares in CEC Entertainment Inc., parent company of Chuck E. Cheese restaurants, closed at $32.86, up 99 cents compared with the previous week's close of $31.87. CEC traded at a 52-week high of $39.59 in August 2008 and a 52-week low of $12.96 in November 2008.   California Pizza Kitchen closed at $15.23 on July 17, up 47 cents compared with the previous week's close of $14.76. CPKI has traded as high as $17.44 in mid-April and as low as $5.24 in November 2008.   Pizza Inn closed at $1.69 on July 17, up 14 cents compared with the previous week's close of $1.55. PZZI traded at a 52-week high of $2.72 in October 2008 and a 52-week low of 98 cents in April 2009.
