CHICAGO — Block cheese prices were relatively flat last week on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, with prices averaging just above $1.13 per pound for the trading week ended May 15, off a penny from the previous week.
Block cheese prices closed at $1.13 per pound Monday and Tuesday, just under $1.14 per pound Wednesday and just above $1.13 per pound Thursday and Friday.
Prices are off 92 cents, or 45 percent, compared with this time last year, when block cheese averaged $2.05 per pound. Wheat Wheat for July delivery closed at just under $7.05 per bushel Friday on the Minneapolis Grain Exchange. Prices on wheat for May delivery had closed at just under $6.93 per bushel Monday and $6.98 per bushel Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Gasoline and diesel fuel The nationwide average for regular unleaded gasoline was $2.31 per gallon May 18, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service, up 8 cents from the previous week. Prices are up 12 percent from an average of $2.06 per gallon a month ago and off 38 percent from an average of $3.73 per gallon this time last year. Mid-range unleaded averaged $2.45 per gallon while premium unleaded stood at $2.54 per gallon. The nationwide average price for diesel fuel stood at $2.29 per gallon May 18, up 2 cents from last week. Diesel prices are off 49 percent from an average of $4.51 per gallon this time last year. Natural gas spot prices rose this week at most market locations in the lower 48 states last week, according to the Energy Information Administration, with increases generally ranging between 49 and 95 cents per million Btu (MMBtu).
Prices at the Henry Hub climbed by 75 cents per MMBtu, or about 20 percent, to $4.42 per MMBtu. Prices in the Northeast were $4.76 per MMBtu on May 13.
Pizza company stocks
Shares in Pizza Hut parent Yum! Brands Inc opened at $33.54 on May 18, identical to last Monday's open. Yum traded at a 52-week high of $41.59 in May 2008 and a 52-week low of $21.50 in November 2008.
Domino's opened at $8.23, off 9 percent compared with last week's open of $9.01. Over the past 52 weeks, DPZ has traded as high as $14.20 in May 2008 and as low as $2.61 in November 2008.
Papa John's stock opened at $27.37, off 2 percent compared with last Monday's open of $27.97. PZZA traded at a 52-week high of $30.68 in September 2008 and a 52-week low of $12.78 in November 2008.
Shares in CEC Entertainment Inc., parent company of Chuck E. Cheese restaurants, opened at $31.58, up 3 percent compared with last Monday's open of $30.60. CEC traded at a 52-week high of $39.59 in May 2008 and a 52-week low of $12.96 in November 2008.
California Pizza Kitchen opened at $13.64 on May 18, off 8 percent compared with last week's open of $14.80. Over the past 52 weeks, CPKI has traded as high as $17.44 in mid-April and as low as $5.24 in November 2008.
Pizza Inn opened at $1.48, up 3 percent compared with last Monday's open of $1.44. PZZI traded at a 52-week high of $2.75 in October 2008 and a 52-week low of 98 cents in April 2009.
