LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Papa John's International capped off a solid 2005 with comparable-store sales increases in December and its fourth quarter.
According to a news release, domestic systemwide comps for the five weeks ended Dec. 25 increased 4.8 percent (composed of a 7.9 percent increase at company-owned units and a 3.9 percent increase at franchised units).
Domestic systemwide comps for the fourth quarter, ended Dec. 25 increased 6.4 percent (composed of a 9.9 percent increase at company-owned restaurants and a 5.5 percent increase at franchise restaurants). The company said the introduction of Papa's Perfect Pan Pizza helped fuel the sales boost.
For the year, domestic systemwide comps were up 5.1 percent (composed of a 7.4 percent increase at company-owned units and a 4.3 percent increase at franchised units). Papa John's estimates the temporary closure of stores in the Gulf and Florida Coast regions due to hurricane-related issues negatively impacted domestic comps 0.4 percent during the fourth quarter and 0.2 percent for the year. Substantially all such units were reopened by December.
International comps rose 10 percent for December, 12.4 percent for the quarter and 13 percent for the year, on a constant U.S. dollar basis.
The No. 3 chain ended the year with 3,038 stores operating in 49 states and 22 international markets.
