Delivery driver fights off hold-up man and escapes harm

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- A pizza delivery driver successfully fought off an armed robber on the night of Sept. 14.

According to the Kansas City Star, Overland Park police said that as the driver walked from his car in a Papa John's parking lot at 9:15 p.m., a robber pressed a pistol against his stomach and demanded money.

Thinking the robber was joking, the driver knocked the pistol away, which set off a scramble for the gun. The driver then ran for the pizza shop screaming for help, and the robber jumped into a car seen driving around the parking lot earlier.

Police called the victim lucky to not be shot.

"I admire his bravery, but we frown on these types of heroics," said Overland Park police detective Jeff Cohee. "We prefer people to be good witnesses and go home safely that night."
