Donatos Pizzeria tests low-carb, no-dough soy-based pizza

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Donatos Pizzeria is testing a low-carb no-dough pizza at multiple outlets in and around Columbus.

According to the Columbus Post-Dispatch, the company uses a base of soy-based protein crumbles to hold the sauce, cheese and toppings. The baked product is served on a paper plate and eaten with a knife and fork.

A single serving pizza has 14 grams of carbohydrates, compared to 53 in its thin-crust pies.

In a separate report, Parma, Ohio-based Pizzaroni's has introduced a low-carb pizza its owner said has only 4 grams of carbs per slice.

According to, Dave and Natalie Teare started selling a whole-grain crust pizza on Jan. 8.

"We're having record days here," said Dave Teare. "We're taking the sugar out, using seven different whole grains," said Teare.

Pizzaroni's also is selling its low-carb pies for take-and-bake.
