ATLANTA -- Terry and Cindy Schmidt, franchisees of six Johnny's New York Style Pizza restaurants, opened their seventh store in metro Atlanta on Feb. 24.
The new shop marked the chain's 34th unit; they're located throughout Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama.
According to the Gainesville Times, the newest store seats and 80 employs 15.
The Schmidts also plan to open two other area pizza outlets in July; the chain plans to open four others this year.
"After we retired from our corporate jobs a few years ago, we were looking for something else to do," said Terry Schmidt. "So we thought the pizza business was a good industry to go into."
Terry Schmidt retired from MCI Communications in Atlanta five years ago and became a franchisee. His wife, Cindy, retired a few years ago as chief executive officer of VHA Hospital Inc., a medical collection agency, and joined him in their operations.
Terry Schmidt first worked at a pizza shop called Johnny's Pizza, while in college in Syracuse, N.Y. After graduating, the Schmidts relocated to Tampa, Fla., but stopped in Atlanta on their way to meet several former Johnny's owners, who had reopened their company under the name of Johnny's New York Style Pizza.
