Marco's Pizza maker wins gourmet competition in Calif.

LOS ANGELES — Toledo, Ohio, native Matt Swan, general manager of a Marco's Pizza restaurant in Las Vegas, took top honors in the "Best Gourmet Pizza" in the California Pizza Championships. The event was held during the Western Foodservice & Hospitality Expo, Aug. 26-28.
According to a news release, Swan won with the Marco's White Cheezy Pizza, which blends a butter-garlic sauce, three cheeses, bacon, onions, tomatoes and feta. Swan pocketed a $750 first prize and earned the rights to compete in the Houston Regional Competition. Both contests are sponsored by Roma Foods, a supplier to the pizza industry.
"We are quite proud of Matt Swan," said Jack Butorac Jr., president of Marco's Franchising. "It is a remarkable achievement for Matt to go up against five-star pizza chefs and win. The timing could not have been better, since we recently became registered to eventually franchise Marco's Pizza in California."
