Mary's Pizza Shack eases gas-price burden with 'top off' promo

SONOMA, Calif.—Mary's Pizza Shack, a 47-year-old, 15-unit family-owned Italian casual restaurant chain, is launching a "top off" promotion that allows guests one free topping for every gas receipt brought into its restaurants.

According to a news release, the promotion is designed to ease the burden of high gas prices, and runs from May 16 to June 4. If more than one topping is ordered, the discount will be applied to the less expensive topping. The offer is good for dine-in, take-out and delivery pizzas.

The release cited data from the Food Institute saying gas price increases appear to be impacting consumers' grocery shopping and dining-out habits. The latest government data shows sales at foodservice and drinking places increased just 5.5 percent over April 2005—the smallest such increase in 14 months. With gasoline nearing record highs in recent weeks, retail analysts warn consumers are feeling the pinch and will tend to dine out less.

Mary's Pizza Shack is known for made-to-order pizzas and varied toppings such as linguica, feta cheese, pesto sauce, artichoke hearts, whole baby clams and more.
