May sales are soft at Papa John's

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Papa John's International, Inc. (NASDAQ:PZZA) announced that domestic systemwide comparable sales for the four weeks ended May 25, 2003, decreased 0.4 percent (composed of a 2.1 percent decrease at company-owned units and a 0.2 percent increase at franchise units).

According to a news release, the May 2003 period included the introduction of the new Grilled Chicken Alfredo specialty pizza, supported by national television; whereas, the prior year period included various local market option promotions, which were not supported by national television.

Total systemwide international sales for May increased 4 percent, on a constant U.S. dollar basis, over last year.

At May 25, there were 2,792 Papa John's units (591 company-owned and 2,201 franchised) operating in 49 states and 11 international markets. Papa John's also franchises 142 Perfect Pizza restaurants in the UK.
