New York writer finds excellent pizza on West Coast

San Francisco Chronicle: New Yorker Ed Levine makes no bones about his dislike of California pizza in his new book, "Pizza: A Slice of Heaven."

"California is, on the whole," he says, "a lousy pizza state."

I had a chance to challenge the expert. Levine and his wife, Vicky Bijur, were jetting into town for a couple of days. I could have them for a few hours, just enough time to hit up some of the Bay Area's best pizzerias. I'd have Levine eating his words in no time.

We wanted to highlight some new and old pizzerias that showed dedication, passion and sometimes obsession.
