NZ Pizza Huts drive strong 2Q gains for Restaurant Brands

AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- Coffee and fast-food franchisee firm Restaurant Brands, posted a 17.7 percent sales gain for the second quarter 2002.

According to the New Zealand Herald, total revenues for the period were $94 million (U.S. $44.1 million) at its Pizza Hut, KFC and Starbucks stores.

Sales at its Pizza Hut stores were $24.1 million (U.S. $1.1) for the period, a 12.4 percent increase over the same period last year. The chain's comparable-store sales were up 6.6 percent, and three new outlets were opened in the quarter.

Restaurant Brands chief executive Jim Collier said Pizza Hut has recorded nine straight quarters of sales growth since purchasing all of New Zealand's Eagle Boys pizza outlets in 2000. In March the franchise company bought 51 of 60 outlets in the Australian state of Victoria.

The Victoria outlets posted $8.9 million (U.S. $4.2 million) in sales for the period, 14 percent less than the same period last year.
